WE/SS ASSOCIATES Consulting in Geology 6 Geohydrofogy
2938 McClure Street, Oakland, CA 94609 415-465-1100
ENVIRO\rti⢠fAL HEALTH
FERMIT/SERVICES
1 March 1988
Julian Munoz, Plant Engineer
Safeway Stores
1111 Navy Drive
Stockton, CA 95024
Re: Excavation Closure
1111 Navy Drive, Stockton, CA
WA Job # 44-245
Dear Mr. Munoz:
As we discussed on 24 February 1988, this letter presents the
additions to our 10 February 1988 proposal for closure of the diesel tank
excavation. Dave Carls of the San Joaquin Local Health District (SJLHD)
requested that we collect soil samples from below the concrete slab in the
excavation to determine whether hydrocarbons are present there. Therefore,
we propose to:
1) Install a temporary shoring in the excavation to protect workers
from a failure of the excavation walls and expose the slab by
pumping water from the excavation and discharging it to the
sanitary sewer;
2) Core eight holes through the concrete slab in the vicinity of the
ends of the former tanks;
3) Collect samples of native soil from one to two feet below the
slab by driving steam-cleaned brass tubes through the coreholes;
4) Composite the eight samples into four samples for analysis by
modified EPA Method 8015, gas chromatography with flame
ionization detection (GC/FID) at Brown and Caldwell Analytical
Laboratories of Emeryville, California (B&C) ; and
5) Report the results of this phase of the investigation.
Precision Industries of Stockton, California will install the
temporary shoring, expose the slab, and core the holes through the slab
under separate contract to Safeway Stores. Weiss Associates will collect
the soil samples for analysis and prepare the report. An extra-scope-of-work
budget for these additional tasks will be forwarded to you under separate
cover.
A Division of AguaTierra Associates Incorporated
