The excavated area will be temporarily fenced for safety
reasons and to minimize potential exposure to personnel.
i. Once any obviously stained soils are removed, a sample of
the native soil from the fill or pump end of the pit
bottom for each tank location. These samples will be
analyzed for the compounds listed on Table 1.
j . A soil sample will be collected every 20 linear feet in
the trenches where piping was removed.
k. If water is present in the pit, the water will be sampled
and analyzed for the same parameters as the soil
samples.
1. The analytical results of the soil and/or water samples
will determine the next step of closure. If the analyti-
cal results indicate no contamination, the excavated pit
will be backfilled and the area resurfaced upon receipt
of approval to do so from the San Joaquin County Public
Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) .
If contamination is indicated, then further investigation
will be implemented and appropriate steps undertaken in
accordance with the PHS/EHD. The determination as to
whether contamination exists will be left up to the
PHS/EHD.
5. 0 CLOSURE SCHEDULE
Notification to PHS/EHD of intent to close: 20 days
Expected date of initiating closure and to cease receiving waste:
Day 0
Final date for removal of tank inventory and disposal: Day 50
Final date for facility decontamination: Day 90
Estimated date for closure completion and certification: Day 120
6. 0 WASTES GENERATED FROM CLOSURE
Wastewater generated from decontamination of the tank and equipment
will be sampled for the same constituents as those listed in Table
1. If the analytical results indicate the wastewater is within the
criteria established by the PHS/EHD, then the wastewater will be
discharged to the SJDC sanitary sewer system (only upon receipt of
approval to do so from the PHS/EHD) . If the waste concentrations
are above the allowable discharge levels, then these wastewaters
will be transported to an appropriate treatment/disposal facility.
PHS/EHD will be notified prior to the start of the closure
activities. Approximately 300 gallons of wastewater are expected
to be generated and collected. Solid wastes generated from the
excavation will be either drummed or loaded onto bulk transport
