r, f•_J • • SECTION 2 • LAYOUT AND PREPARATION 1.2.1 Inspection While dandling, storing, and trans- porting the pipe, it can sometimes incur rough treatment. Therefore,. inspect all pipe surfaces for possible damage to the pipe wall, spigot, and bell ends. Inspect fittings for any signs of damage. Damaged sections of pipe must be repaired or cut out and replaced. Damaged fittings must be replaced. If in doubt about damage, contact your local Smith Fiberglass Products' distributor or representative. Because the degree of weathering, surface degradation, and subse- quent effect on bond strength varies greatly depending on geographic lo- cation and re- lated factors such as cloud cover, season- al hours of daylight,in- tensity of sun- light, humidity, etc., it is difficult to place a fixed time limit on the acceptable amount of exposure. Therefore, in all instances where protective coverings are removed from machined surfaces and ultraviolet exposure exceeds one day, corrective action must be taken. See para. 1.8.1. 1.2.2 Installation Crew Size and Organization Each installation is different, and requirements change de- pending on whether the installation is simple -consisting of long, straight runs -or complex. Requirements are also affected by pipe size, installation temperature, and similar influences. See Table 1.2.1. For guidance under specific circumstances, consult your Smith Fiberglass Products' dis- tributor or representative. Before beginning any installation, it is important that all crew members be familiar with the installation procedures described in this manual. It is also important that a "Fiberglass Piping Systems Installation Checklist for Underground Petroleum Pipe" be reviewed by the crew and filled out as the job progresses. A completed copy of the checklist should be retained to document that the in- stallation complies with current federal regulations. Installation checklists are available from your local Smith Fiberglass Products' distributor or representative. RED THREAD IIA Pipe Sr Fittings Following are general guidelines that apply to most piping installations: 1. For most average -size service stations, a two -worker crew is the minimum recommended crew size. We suggest that the crew size be increased as the pipe di- ameter increases or when installing secondary contain- ment piping. 2. Organize the crew so that the adhesive is spread on the bonding surfaces as quickly as possible after mixing the adhesive -particularly in extremely hot weather. 3. Plan adhesive kit usage so that the crew won't have to wait while one member goes to get another kit. 4. Plan ahead so that a sufficient number of bonds are available to use up one whole adhesive kit before that kit is mixed. 5. Make plans that allow for positive heat curing of all field -made joints by the end of the work day when am- bient temperature is below 707 (21'C). See page 2 for UL Listed adhesives, requirements, and restrictions. Following is a basic list of equipment that should be avail- able before installation. Always be certain that appropri- ate tapering tools and adhesive kits are at the job site. Note: Use the proper tapering tool for tapering each size of pipe (see Section 5).
