SECTION I # Secondary Containment Piping System Components
d. If solvent is used to clean bonding surfaces, allow
the cleaner to evaporate. Then apply adhesive to
all bonding surfaces, and insert the nipple into the
line by lifting the line or moving it to one side.
Pushing the pipe back into the line will push the
nipple into the bell. Make certain that all tapers
are tightly locked. Be careful not to cock the joint.
1.8.4 Leaking Joints
Any adhesive -bonded joints that leak during pressure test-
ing MUST BE REMOVED AND REPLACED. Follow the
procedures shown for Fig. 1.8.6 using two sleeve couplings
and pipe nipple.
Upon completing any necessary repairs to the piping sys-
tem, follow the proper testing sequence to verify the sys-
tem's integrity.
PART TWO • SECONDARY CONTAINMENT PIPING
]NTRODUCTION
Before beginning any installation, it is important that
all crew members read and be familiar with the instal-
lation procedures described in this manual.
The secondary containment piping system is designed for
use with RED THREAD IIA product pipe. The secondary
containment system consists of the next larger size pipe
and special two-piece fittings. Smith Fiberglass Products
also offers a patented(l) telescoping containment pipe sys-
tem that allows 100% inspection of primary piping (refer
to Part Three).
Many of the procedures used for installing product
pipe and fittings are also used for installing secondary
containment pipe and fittings. Refer to Part One for
installation instructions for product pipe and fittings
and to Bulletin No. F6600 for tapering tool operating
instructions.
Following are useful sections of Part One:
Section 1 - Storage and Handling
Section 2 - Layout and Preparation
Section 3 - Tool and Equipment List
Note: For installation of bolts, use one of the following:
1. W variable impact wrench with !d' socket
2. l" variable speed drill motor with X„” socket and X6"
wrench
(1) U.S. Patent No. 4,805,444
(2) Band -It Banding Tool available from Band -It Idex, Inc., P.O. Box 16307,
4799 Dahlia St., Denver, CO 80216, 303-320-4555.
3. One I4" wrench
For installing saddles, the following equipment is recom-
mended:
1. Sanding equipment
a. power sander with rough surface sanding disc (flex-
ible pad with 40 grit or less disc), or
b. hand file (coarse)
2. Fine-tooth circular hole saw with pilot drill
3. Hose clamps or Band-It(2) banding too] large enough to
secure saddles to pipe. (If banding is used, the Band -It
banding tool is preferred, because this tool does not
leave slack in the band when the tool is removed. Two
Band -It tools are recommended so that the saddle can
be pulled down uniformly. Use X" (19 mm) banding.
Section 5 - Cutting and Tapering (cutting)
Section 6 - Installation (piping layout and trench design;
adhesive mixing and curing)
SECTION I • SECONDARY CONTAINMENT PIPING SYSTEM
COMPONENTS
2.1.1 Secondary Containment Pipe
Smith Fiberglass Products secondary containment piping
sizes are as follows:
Containment Pipe Size For Product Pipe Size
3'" 75 mm 2" 50 mm
4" 100 mm 3" 75 nim
6"(3) 150 mm . 4" 100 mm
2.1.2 Secondary Containment Fittings
Available secondary containment fittings are tees, 90° el-
bows, 45" elbows, couplings, nipples, termination fittings
(with or without'/," NPT threaded outlet), and saddles
(belled or with NPT threaded outlets).
2.1.3 Adhesive for Secondary Containment Piping
For petroleum products, alcohols, and alcohol/gasoline
mixtures, use DS -8000 or DS -7000 series adhesive for in-
stalling secondary containment piping systems. When
joining secondary containment pipe -to -fittings and fit-
tings -to -fittings, fiberglass filler must be added to the
adhesive to ensure optimum performance of this type
of bonded joint. Filler must be ordered from Smith
Fiberglass Products. Due to the quantity of adhesive re -
(3) Mote; 6" (150 mm) secondary containment pipe is not UL Listed.
RED THREAD IIA Pipe & Fittings — 21
