Those methods not found in SW 846, are specifically noted below. Refer to the 'SWRCB LUFT Field Manual", Appendix A-20, Table 3-5 for detection limits of motor vehicle fuels (gasoline and diesel). Refer to 1-2-3 "Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and Investigation of USTs" for the waste and motor oil detection limits. Detection limits that remain below the MCI., STLC or Allowable Limit of the contaminant in question will be accepted, however laboratory shall utilize the most conservative method. Fused capillary columns are preferred to packed columns; a packed column may be used as a 'first cut" with "dirty" samples or once the hydrocarbons have been characterized and proper QA/AC is followed. For Drinking water sources, EPA recommends that the 500 series for volatile organics be used in preference to the 600 series because the detection limits are lower and the QA(QC is better. Samples exhibiting any level of heavy metal contamination may require further analysis. PHS-EHD recommends holding these samples until disposal is indicated. EH 23 048 (Revised 7/10/92) Page 8
