by polarized light microscopy (PLM) that, when dry, cannot be crumbled, pulverized, or
reduced to powder by hand pressure. Category II non-friable ACM is defined as any material,
excluding Category I non-friable ACM, containing more than 1 percent asbestos as determined
using PLM that, when dry cannot be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand
pressure. A Regulated Asbestos-Containing Material (RACM) is defined as friable asbestos-
containing material, Category I non-friable ACM that has become friable, Category I non-
friable ACM that will be subject to sanding, grinding, cutting, or has become crumbled,
pulverized,or reduced to powder by the forces expected to act on the material in the course of
demolition or renovation operations.
3.3 Sampling Strategy
Sample collection depends on the category that the HA falls into and the amount of
material present, as follows:
AHERA GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING THE NUMBER OF SAMPLES TO TAKE
HA CATEGORY HA SIZE SAMPLES REQUIRED
Surfacing Materials <1,000 SF 3
1,000-5,000 SF 5
>5,000 SF 7 or more
Thermal System Insulation No Stipulation 3+ Must also sample all repairpatches)
Miscellaneous Materials No Stipulation Per AHED A,these materials must be sampled"in a
manner sufficient to determine whether or not they
contain asbestos."
If the analytical results indicated that all of the samples collected per HA did not contain
asbestos, then the HA(material) would be considered a non-ACM. However, if the analytical
results of one or more of the samples collected per HA indicate that asbestos is present in
quantities of greater than 1 percent asbestos by weight (as defined by EPA), all of the HA
(material) would be treated as an ACM regardless of any other analytical results. Materials
that can visually be determined to be non-asbestos containing (ie., fibrous glass, foam rubber,
etc.)by the accredited inspector are not required to be sampled. Specifically in this building the
inspector did not sample fiberglass pipe insulation, glass, metal, wood, carpet, concrete, or
f tmishings(this list is not intended to be all inclusive).
6
