this area is exposed to the elements (i.e. rain). AIT should make sure that standing water does not
accumulate in the secondary containment system. We observed seven 55 -gallon hazardous waste
containers in the hazardous waste storage area: four resin containers, two deburring sludge containers, and
one activated carbon container. All seven hazardous waste containers did not have the hazardous
properties and physical state of the waste identified on the labels (see attached SOV).
We observed two 55 -gallon containers just north of the hazardous waste storage area that were not
adequately labeled. I informed Mr. Colbert that he needs to adequately label the material within ten days of
discovering that the material is inadequately labeled.
We walked through the shipping and receiving room and the testing rooms. We did not observe any
hazardous waste management activities in these areas. This concluded the walk through portion of the
inspection. We proceeded back to the conference room to review records. Findings from the record review
can be seen in Section III -Documents Review.
We broke for lunch around 1230 hours and resumed the inspection around 1330 hours. I explained to Mr.
Colbert what we observed during the walk through inspection and record review. I issued a SOV to AIT at
the conclusion of our inspection. We left AIT at approximately 1500 hours.
V. VIOLATIONS
Yes No
Summary of Violations attached? X _
VI. CONCLUSIONS
On December 29, 2000, the Department of Toxic Substances Control received the original signed return to
compliance letter. On or about January 18th, 2001, a Ms. Jeanne Homsey called me in regards to the
secondary containment certification for AIT's wastewater treatment unit. She stated that she is working on
this project; however, she has other projects that are occupying her time. Ms. Homsey stated that she will
address AIT's request for secondary containment certification as soon as she can. After receiving the
return to compliance letter and associated material (attached to this inspection report as Attachment 1) , no
further investigation is warranted at this time.
ous Substances ScientistUat
orsc (3i95) Page 4 of 34
A. k"Wh1:-t"AWV tc 1
