Weber Avenue, Third Floor
Stockton, CA 95202
Re: Helena Chemical Company r 2245 West Chatter Way, Stockton, CA
Dear Mr. Wilson:
This letter follows up on my letter to you of October 29, 2001 regarding, among other things, your
October 25, 2001 inspection of Helena's Stockton facility.
The October 25 inspection report required Helena to provide information regarding a potential
underground storage tank near Helena's facility. Shortly after the inspection, H®lena-Stoddon's
Operations Manager, John Valdez, received a telephone call from Michelle Sterni-Le advising him
that your office had obtained the information from another source, and that a response from Helena
on the matter was no longer required. Accordingly, Helena has considered this matter resolved. In
any event, Helena has not owned or controlled any underground tanks at the facility, and Helena
has no information on the status of any such tanks.
The inspection report also required that Helena properly lapel five unlabeled containers of material.
Helena properly labeled each of these containers shortly after the October 25 inspection. Following
this, two of the containers were removed from the site and properly disposed of early this month.
Helena was instructed by your office to maintain the contents of another of the containers an site
pending further instructions, and has done so. The other two containers hold a herbicide product.
The inspection report also asked that Helena complete its contingency plan and submit a copy to
your office by November 25, 2001. Helena and its consultant, George Donaldson of Geomatrbl are
working diligently on this plan, and expect that it will be completed and submitted shortly. On
Monday, the first business day after November 25, Mr, Donaldson requested from you an extension
of time for completion of the plan, and we took forward to your response,
SILICON VALLEY SAN DIEGO SAN gIEGO/GOLDEN TRIANGLE SAN FRANCISCO AUSTIN SEATTLE SACRAMENTO LA30LLA
