DOT General Awareness Hazardous <br /> Materials Training <br /> Department of Transportation Packing Requirements <br /> o Items meeting the DOT definitions of <br /> hazardous materials must be packaged in <br /> UN/NA approved containers <br /> o The packaging must be compatible with the <br /> o Regulates transportation of hazardous material <br /> materials (49 CFR, 172) o Non-bulk containers (< 119 gallons) <br /> o Issues citations regarding the transportation o Bulk containers (>119 gallons) <br /> of hazardous materials <br /> o Issues regulations governing commercial <br /> transportation that are enforced by CHP Labeling Requirements <br /> o Shipping names are found in 49 CFR <br /> Hazard Classes 172.101 (if an item is listed in this table, it <br /> must be shipped as a hazardous material) <br /> o Class 1 - Explosives o All hazardous materials packages must have <br /> o Class 2 - Gases specific labeling as mandated by the DOT <br /> o Class 3 - Flammable Liquids including: <br /> o Class 4- Flammable Solids - Name and address of the shipper <br /> o Class 5 - Oxidizers/Organic Peroxides (exemptions for quantity and type of <br /> o Class 6-Toxic and Infectious Substances shipment) <br /> o Class 7 - Radioactive - DOT Hazard Diamonds (Primary and <br /> o Class 8 - Corrosives Secondary) -see172.400 (b) <br /> o Class 9 - Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods - Complete DOT Shipping Name <br /> - Generator's information, shipping <br /> information <br /> Waste Manifest Codes o Labels must be within 6"of one another <br /> o All markings must be in good condition and <br /> o D001 —Ignitable: Wastes that easily catch legible <br /> on fire and sustain combustion o Primary diamonds must have a hazard class <br /> o D002—Corrosive: Wastes that can readily number and secondary diamonds are <br /> corrode or dissolve materials they come in prohibited from having numbers <br /> contact with <br /> o D003 —Reactive: Wastes that readily " <br /> explode or undergo violentreactions Proper Shipping Name <br /> o D004— D045, F, K, P &U Codes—Toxic: <br /> Wastes that cause deleterious health or o Taken EXACTLY from table 172.101 <br /> environmental effects o Includes columns 2,3,4 and 5 plus possible <br /> additional information (RQ, waste, NOS <br /> names) <br />
