June 16, 1992
Received laboratory sample analysis report. All samples passed the toxicity
(Fish Bioassay) test.
Sample "LMT 4299-713" air dry room floor sweepings was found to contain
cadmium (416 ppm) and lead (2,200 ppm). The lead level exceeds Total
Threshold Limit Concentrate (TTLC) levels (1,000 ppm) and is considered
hazardous. The air dry paint may not be suitable for recycling/reuse. The floor
sweepings must be handled as hazardous waste.
July 31, 1992
Completed review of laboratory sample results. I contacted Mr. Beitz and
informed him the air dry paint room sample was high in lead. Mr. Beitz stated
there was no lead in paint that LMT uses in the air dry paint shed. I told Mr.
Beitz air dry paint room employee should have a health check and wear
protective gear. Since LMT did not check the original (March 12, 1991) air dry
paint room sample for lead, the lead test should be run.
August 3, 1992
Mr. Beitz phoned and asked again about the level of lead in floor sweepings.
informed him lead level was 2,200 ppm. Mr. Beitz stated that he was at a loss
to explain how the lead level got that high, because he stopped using lead
based paint several years ago.
Mr. Beitz phoned a second time and told me he is trying to find out exactly
what happened. He stated Material Safety Data Sheets do not show any lead
in paint. Mr. Beitz is to determine the source of contamination, and is following
up with the paint manufacturer and will do lab tests.
April 21, 1993
Received a phone message from Dalton Beitz requesting DTSC laboratory
sample results. I faxed him the sample results.
I asked Mr. Beitz if LMT had done any further testing on floor sweepings as no
results have been submitted to PHS-EHD. Mr. Beitz said no testing had been
done.
May 27, 1993
No laboratory sample results have been received on the air dry floor
sweepings. No further contact with Mr. Beitz. Completed Inspection Report,
Addendum and Report of Violations.
7
