enamel coating is applied to the welded area. The enamel
coating is referred to as a "side stripe" and is applied to
prevent the tin from coming in contact with the food. The
cylinders are then baked in an oven to "cure" the side
stripe. Once the cylinders are cured, one end is
mechanically placed on the cylinder by crimping the tin
surfaces together.
VI. HAZARDOUS WASTE ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
1. The application of the side stripe placed on the cans
and the cleaning of the enamel coating line generates a
hazardous waste liquid that is composed of enamel
sludge and methylethyl ketone (M.E.K. ) solvent. In
1992, 55. 2 tons of this waste was manifested to Romic
Chemical Corporation, 2081 Bay Road, East Palo Alto,
CA, 94303 .
2 . Two oil/water waste streams are generated; one from the
pneumatic machinery used to manufacture the cans, and
one from the maintenance of the machinery used in the
production of the cans. In 1992, 2 . 64 tons of this
waste was shipped to Romic Chemical in Palo Alto, CA.
3 . A solvent waste stream characterized as hazardous waste
liquid, not otherwise specified, Methylethyl Ketone, is
generated from mop water collected while cleaning the
production floor. In 1992 , 16. 5 tons of this waste was
hauled off site to Romic Chemical in Palo Alto, CA.
4 . A Safety Kleen Station is maintained to service various
mechanical lifts at the facility. In 1992, . 04 tons of
this waste was manifested off site to Safety Kleen,
5050 Salida Boulevard, Salida, CA, 95368 .
5. Six empty drums last containing a combustible liquid
were manifested off site (overpack drums) . This
accounted for . 3 tons of "drum waste" shipped to Romic
Chemical in Palo Alto, CA (Manifest #91627236) .
VII. VIOLATIONS:
At the time of inspection, the following violations were
noted:
A. Flammable Storage Building:
1. Two drums of hazardous waste labeled as waste oil
had an accumulation date that exceeded the 90 day
storage period.
3
