SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT
C:
f
i :.Ya I>` 600 E Main Street Stockton - CA 95202
(209)468-3420•Fax.(209)468-3448• Web:www.siaov.org/ehd
gCiCOPt?./
EMERGENCY RESPONSE INVESTIGATION REPORT:(INCLUDE CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY.RECOMMENDATIONS CLEANUP AM FINAL DISPOSITION)
4-21-11: Kurt Lund of Pacific Ethanol reported a sulfuric acid spill to the EHD. He said the spill was into secondary
containment and was flushed with water. The secondary containment sump liquid (including the acid)was pumped
back into the manufacturing process.
I arrived on site at 5 pm. Kurt Lund met me and described the incident. He said 0.2 gallons of 93% sulfuric acid
leaked from a transfer line fitting onto concrete which drains to a sump. An employee was exposed to the acid on
his pants and he touched his face with acid exposed hands. The employee used the safety shower 10 feet away
from the spill and flushed the acid from his body. I spoke with employee and he had dry clothes with no apparent
injuries. He changed clothes after the incident.
I measured the pH of the water puddling near the spill. The pH was approximately 4.5, indicating that the water
flush was effective.
4-22-11: Wrote ER report and printed photos.
Rev.08/16/10 Page 3 of 3 ER Record
