Oil Spill Prevention Control Et Countermeasure (SPCC)
SLIDE 5
Potential Impacts of a Spill
Review the site map and
understand how water flows off
of the site. Identify all discharge
points, potential environmental
impact areas such as water
bodies, community/neighbor
properties, roadways, etc. (a
`discharge point' refers to the
location that water flows off of
our property and should be
marked on the SPCC site map).
Be prepared to point to these
areas on the map during the
training session.
Include in the Notes box below an
example of how a spill from any
one of the sites storage/handling
areas would reach a waterway or
impact our neighbors.
SPILL SCENARIO: Use a past spill
or leak from your site as the
example, if relevant.
Notes:
LEADER GUIDE
What are the potential impacts of a spill or leak
in the areas we just discussed?
Oil spills can result in both immediate and long
term environmental damage. Not only does it
negatively impact the environment it can also
lead to penalties and fines for Waste
Management. Obviously, we want to prevent any
oil spill or leak from reaching a waterway,
impacting our neighbors or becoming a regulatory
violation.
It is important to note, that if a leak or spill
happens, it will travel along the same path that
water flows. So let's look at the water flow
patterns on and off of our site.
Reference the site map and describe to the
participants how water flows off of the site.
Point out all discharge points and other
potential environmental and community
impact areas.
Now let's consider where oil would flow if we
had an oil spill.
Referencing your notes below, provide an
example of a spill scenario, cover only where
oil would flow. In slide 9 you will refer back
to this scenario and discuss the spill response
ECEI VE'
OCT 0 7 2015
7- 1lRONMEN7
... _-I 1 TH .I)I'pa DTA: 9'- .
SPCC -version 1.2 P a g e 16
