Specification No . : RGS0024-87 <br /> PART II - SPECIFIC CONDITIONS <br /> Section 13 - Asphalt Concrete <br /> Paving <br /> 13 . 6 Materials : <br /> 13 . 6 . 1 General : Use locally available materials and gradations <br /> which exhibit a satisfactory record of previous <br /> installations . <br /> 13 . 6 . 2 Base Course Aggregate : Sound , angular crushed stone , <br /> crushed gravel , 1 - 1 / 2 " maximum size , conforming to the <br /> requirements for Class II aggregate . <br /> 13 . 6 . 3 Prime Coat : Cut-back asphalt type : MC-30 , MC- 70 , or <br /> MC-250 . <br /> 13 . 6 . 4 Tack Coat : Emulsified asphalt , SS- 1 , SS- 1h , CSS-1 , or <br /> CSS- 1h diluted with or part water to part emulsified <br /> asphalt . <br /> 13 . 6 . 5 Asphalt-Aggregate Mixture : The viscosity grade of the <br /> asphalt shall be AR-4 , 000 . The mineral aggregate shall <br /> be Type B , 1 / 2 inch maximum size , medium grading , and <br /> shall conform to the requirements set forth in Section 39 <br /> of the Standard Specifications . <br /> 13 . 7 Surface Preparation : <br /> 13 . 7 . 1 Remove loose material from compacted subbase surface <br /> immediately before placing base materials and pavements . <br /> 13 . 7 . 2 Proof roll prepared subbase surface to check for unstable <br /> areas and need for additional compaction . Do not begin <br /> paving work until such conditions have been corrected and <br /> are ready to receive base materials and pavements . <br /> 13 . 8 Pavement Base Course : <br /> 13 . 8 . 1 Place base course material on prepared subbase in layers <br /> of uniform thickness , conforming to indicated cross - <br /> section and thickness . Compact base course material at <br /> or near optimum moisture content to achieve a minimum <br /> relative dry density of 95 percent as determined by ASTM <br /> Test Method D1557-78 . <br /> 13 . 8 . 2 Prime Coat : Apply at rate of 0 . 20 to 0 . 50 gallons per <br /> square yard , over compacted base material .
