Main Street
Stockton, CA
r
WPI7 19°x}
SITE CODE: 1903
SanJoaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has recently reviewed
the underground storage tank (UST) file for the above referenced site. During construction of the American
Savings building in 1987-88 five USTs were found and removed.
On November 4, 1987 a 1000 gallon waste oil tank was removed and a soil sample was collected at a depth
of 18 feet below grade beneath this tank. A soil sample was also collected beneath a previously removed
500 gallon waste oil tank at a depth of 11 foot below grade on this date. No odor or discoloration of the
soil beneath these tanks was noted at that time by PHS/EHD staff. The results of those soil samples were
non -detect at detection limits of 10 parts per billion (ppb) for benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene, 20 ppb
for xylene, 1 part per million (ppm) for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline and diesel, and 10
ppm TPH as motor oil.
A 500 gallon boiler fuel tank was removed on November 4, 1987 but soil samples were not collected because
there was strong petroleum odor and discoloration of the soil. This area of the site was to be excavated to
24 feet below grade for the building foundation and underground parking.
On November 10, 1987 a 250 gallon unleaded tank was removed and a soil sample was collected at a depth
of 14 feet below grade beneath the tank. No odor or discoloration of the soil beneath this tank was noted
at the time by PHS/EHD staff. The results of the soil sample was non -detect at detection limits of 50 ppb
for benzene, 100 ppb for toluene and xylene, 200 ppb for ethylbenzene, and 10 ppm for TPH as gasoline
and diesel.
On January 14, 1988 a 1000 gallon bunker oil tank was removed and a soil sample was collected at a depth
of 20 feet below grade beneath the tank. There was no odor to the soil beneath this tank as noted by
PHS/EHD staff. The soil sample results were non -detect at the same detection limits listed above for the
250 gallon tank.
On February 9, 1988 a soil sample was collected at a depth of 25.5 feet below grade beneath the former
location of the 500 gallon boiler fuel tank. There was no odor to the soil that was sampled as noted by
PHS/EHD staff. The soil sample results were non -detect at detection limits of 50 ppb benzene, 100 ppb
toluene and xylene, 200 ppb ethylbenzene, and 10 ppm TPH as gasoline and diesel.
The contaminated soil from the excavation was taken to 1405 Eighth Street, Stockton, and aerated.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
