Sutter Street, Suite 215
Stockton, CA 95202
Dear Mr. Dolen:
Enclosed are the analytical results for the soil sample collected from the
American Savings Project in Stockton, California. The site encompasses
one city block bound by Main Street, Sutter Street, California Street, and
Market Street (Plate 1, Site Location Map).
On November 10, 1987 a Kleinfelder geologist collected and screened a
sample west of the second excavation site (See Plate 2). Mr. Dan Moe from
San Joaquin County Environmental Health specified the sample location and
chemical analysis.
The sample was collected from approximately four feet below the excavated
tank using a backhoe. A brass tube was driven into the soil collected in
the backhoe bucket. The tube was sealed with aluminum foil and tight
—fitting plastic caps, and immediately stored in an iced cooler. To
provide a qualitative indication of possible contamination, a portable
organic vapor detector was used to screen the sample in the field. No
readings were recorded from the field screening.
At the end of the field day the sample was transported under
chain—of—custody to Chemwest Analytical Laboratories in Sacramento. The
sample was analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons by GC—FID, purgeable
aromatics by EPA method 8020, ethylene dibromide by EPA method 8010 and
total organic lead. The analytical results indicate that the
concentration of contaminates are below the reporting limits of the
laboratory. Laboratory data sheets and a chain—of—custody form are
included at the end of this report.
A total petroleum hydrocarbon concentration of 1,600 mg/kg was detected in
a sample collected from the American Savings site on November 4, 1987. At
this time the San Joaquin Local Health District (SJLHD) is the lead
regulating agency for the site. The SJLHD generally requires remediation
or disposal of soil with petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. Any method
of remediating, transporting, or disposing of the contaminated soil should
be approved by the SJLHD. Additional approval may be required from the
Department of Health Services if deemed necessary by the SJLHD.
KLEINFELDER 9795 Business Park Drive, Suite C, Sacramento, CA 95827 (916) 366-1701
