I
1 Mr. Renaldo Crooks 3 May 28, 1986
Well Comoletion Details
The final completion details for the monitoring well are shown in Figure
2. Please note that the screen and casing assembly were installed to a
depth of 25 feet rather than to 45 feet as was originally intended. The
saturated gray sand exhibited "quick conditions" and backfilled the hole
so quickly that only 25 feet of casing could be installed. Several
attempts were made to install the casing to greater depth. The only
alternative would have been to keep the hollow stem full of water while
the casing was installed and the auger removed. However, charging the
well with a volume of water could have distorted the results of the water
quality analyses.
After the well was completed, the well was bailed to remove the sediment
that entered the screen during installation. The well was bailed dry
four times on April 8, 9, and again on the 11th prior to collecting the
water samples. All three times that the well was purged, the water
exhibited a very strong gasoline odor.
Ground Water Sampling
One ground water sample was collected for laboratory analysis on April
11, 1986. The well was first bailed dry four times, and then allowed to
recover for about one-half hour before collecting the sample. To prevent
introduction of contaminants from other sources, the bailer was steam
cleaned prior to purging and sample collection. A portion of the sample
water was placed in a graduated cylinder to check for free floating
product. A 0.10-inch-thick layer of free floating product was identified
on the surface of the water. The sample vials for laboratory analysis
were acquired, preserved, and transported in accordance with EPA Manual
SW 846.
Results of Laboratory Analysis
One sample each of soil and water were submitted to the laboratory for
analysis. The samples of soil and water were analyzed for five
constituents indicative of gasoline contamination. The method of
analysis for benzene, toluene, xylene, total hydrocarbons, other volatile
hydrocarbons, and ethylene dybromide (anti-knock additive) was EPA Method
8020 outlined in the EPA Manual SW 846. The EPA method used for lead was
7421, outlined in the EPA Manual SW 846. The results of the analyses are
listed in Table 1.
I
I
CanonteEngineers
