<br /> ACUTE EXPOSURE- CONCENTRATIONS BETWEEN 270 AND 900 PPM MAY CAUSE A SENSATION
<br /> OF IRRITATION OFTEN BEFORE SIGNS SUCH AS CONJUNCTIVAL HYPEREMIA ARE
<br /> VISIBLE. LIQUID SPLASHED IN THE EYES MAY CAUSE PAIN AND SLIGHT, TRANSIENT
<br /> CORNEAL EPITHELIAL DISTURBANCE, WITH BLEPHAROSPASM AND CONJUNCTIVAL
<br /> HYPEREMIA AND EDEMA.
<br /> CHRONIC EXPOSURE- REPEATED OR PROLONGED EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE CONJUNCTIVITIS
<br /> AND POSSIBLE GRADUAL, IRREVERSIBLE LOSS OF CORNEAL AND CONJUNCTIVAL
<br /> SENSITIVITY.
<br /> BENZENE:
<br /> IRRITANT.
<br /> ACUTE EXPOSURE- VERY HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF VAPORS MAY CAUSE IRRITATION AND
<br /> SMARTING OF THE EYES. DROPLETS CAUSED MODERATE BURNING, BUT ONLY SLIGHT -
<br /> TEMPORARY INJURY TO THE EPITHELIAL CELLS. OCCASIONALLY, HEMORRHAGE IN THE
<br /> RETINA AND CONJUNCTIVA ARE FOUND IN SYSTEMIC POISONING; RARELY, THE FORMER
<br /> IS ACCOMPANIED BY NEURORETINAL EDEMA AND PAPILLEDEMA.
<br /> CHRONIC EXPOSURE- 50% OF RATS EXPOSED TO 50 PPM FOR MORE THAN 600 HOURS
<br /> DEVELOPED CATARACTS. A FEW CASE REPORTS, ONE OF THEM AN ACUTE EXPOSURE,
<br /> SUGGEST THAT SYSTEMIC EXPOSURE MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH RETROBULBAR OR OPTIC
<br /> NEURITIS.
<br /> FIRST AID- WASH EYES IMMEDIATELY WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF WATER, OCCASIONALLY
<br /> LIFTING UPPER AND LOWER LIDS, UNTIL NO EVIDENCE OF CHEMICAL REMAINS
<br /> (APPROXIMATELY 15-20 MINUTES). GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY.
<br /> INGESTION:
<br /> GASOLINE, AUTOMOTIVE, UNLEADED:
<br /> NARCOTIC.
<br /> ACUTE EXPOSURE- MAY CAUSE IRRITATION AND BURNING OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL
<br /> TRACT WITH NAUSEA, VOMITING AND ABDOMINAL PAIN. ABSORPTION MAY RESULT IN
<br /> CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEPRESSION WITH WEAKNESS, COLD SKIN, WEAK PULSE,
<br /> DILATED PUPILS, BLURRED VISION, HEADACHE, DIZZINESS, DROWSINESS, MILD
<br /> EXCITATION, INCOORDINATION, RESTLESSNESS, NERVOUSNESS, IRRITABILITY,
<br /> CONFUSION AND FEVER. SEVERE INTOXICATION MAY RESULT IN COMA, LASTING
<br /> SEVERAL HOURS OR SEVERAL DAYS, AND CONVULSIONS WITH EPILEPTIFORM SEIZURES.
<br /> DIRECT OR INDIRECT ASPIRATION MAY CAUSE PULMONARY EDEMA AND HEMORRHAGE OR
<br /> SEVERE CHEMICAL PNEUMONITIS. LESS FREQUENTLY, EMPHYSEMA AND PNEUMOTHORAX
<br /> MAY OCCUR. TRANSIENT LIVER DAMAGE IS POSSIBLE. DEATH MAY OCCUR FROM
<br /> PULMONARY INSUFFICIENCY.
<br /> CHRONIC EXPOSURE- NO DATA AVAILABLE.
<br /> BENZENE:
<br /> NARCOTIC.
<br /> ACUTE EXPOSURE- MAY CAUSE LOCAL IRRITATION OF THE MUCOUS MEMBRANES OF THE
<br /> MOUTH, THROAT, AND STOMACH. 9-12 GRAMS CAUSED STAGGERING GAIT, VOMITING,
<br /> SOMNOLENCE, SHALLOW, RAPID PULSE, UNCONSCIOUSNESS, FOLLOWED BY DELIRIUM
<br /> WITH SUBSEQUENT CHEMICAL PNEUMONITIS, SERIOUS COLLAPSE DUE TO INITIAL
<br /> STIMULATION, THEN ABRUPT CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEPRESSION. MODERATE
<br /> AMOUNTS GENERALLY CAUSE DIZZINESS, EXCITATION, PALLOR FOLLOWED BY
<br /> FLUSHING, WEAKNESS, DYSPNEA WITH CONSTRICTION OF CHEST, ANXIETY AND
<br /> VISUAL DISTURBANCES. HIGHER CONCENTRATIONS MAY PRODUCE INITIAL EXCITEMENT,
<br /> EUPHORIA AND HILARITY, ABRUPTLY CHANGING TO WEARINESS, FATIGUE AND
<br /> DROWSINESS. VIOLENT EXCITEMENT OR DELIRIUM MAY PRECEDE UNCONSCIOUSNESS,
<br /> COMA AND DEATH. BENZENE IS ABSORBED RAPIDLY. THOSE WHO SURVIVE THE INITIAL
<br /> TOXIC EFFECTS MAY DEVELOP PULMONARY EDEMA, INTRAPULMONARY HEMORRHAGE AND
<br /> PNEUMONIA, POSSIBLY DUE TO ASPIRATION. A SINGLE EXPOSURE MAY PRODUCE
<br /> LONG-TERM EFFECTS AND THE RESULTING PANCYTOPENIA MAY PERSIST FOR AS LONG
<br /> AS 1 YEAR.
<br /> CHRONIC EXPOSURE- DAILY ADMINISTRATION TO HUMANS OF 2-5 GRAMS IN OLIVE OIL
<br /> HAS CAUSED HEADACHE, VERTIGO, BLADDER IRRITABILITY, IMPOTENCE, GASTRIC
<br /> DISTURBANCES, AND EVIDENCE OF RENAL CONGESTION. IN FEMALE RATS TREATED
<br /> WITH 132 SINGLE DAILY DOSES OVER 187 DAYS, NO EFFECTS WERE OBSERVED AT 1
<br /> MG/KG; SLIGHT LEUKOPENIA AT 10 MG/KG; AND BOTH LEUKOPENIA AND ANEMIA AT
<br /> 50 AND 100 MG/KG. RATS GIVEN 50 OR 250 MG/KG, 4-5 DAYS/MEEK FOR 52 WEEKS
<br /> DID NOT EXHIBIT ACUTE TOXIC EFFECTS, BUT THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE
<br /> IN LEUKEMIAS, LYMPHOMAS, ALVEOLAR/BRONCHIOLAR CARCINOMAS, MAMMARY
