1
ATTACHMENT B HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
CONTROL: An H-Nu PID will be used periodically to monitor ambient air if
the release of vapors is suspected during activities, or if hydrocarbon odors are
detected by smell. Air purifying respirators(APR's) with combination chemical
cartridges will be available for use if vapor concentrations reach designated
action levels in the breathing zone (Section 5.0). Nitrile gloves and tyvek
coveralls may be worn in some instances to prevent skin contact. Voilatile
organic concentrations will be measured in the breathing zone at the beginning of
work and whenever the PID measures greater than 5 units.
4.3 Heavy Equipment Operation
Operation of drilling equipment present hazards associated with moving
machinery and heavy equipment.
CONTROL: Equipment operators will have adequate experience and training to
' complete the work safely. All personnel onsite will be advised to work safely
and avoid unnecessary risks associated with operation of this equipment. Hard
hats, steel-toed boots and eye protection will be standard protective equipment.
4.4 Particulates
Dust impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons may be present in the soil onsite.
This material presents a potential hazard through skin exposure and possible
inhalation.
CONTROL: Gloves and protective clothing will be worn to guard against
dermal exposure to these materials. If significant dust is generated during
fieldwork, dust control will be initiated and personnel on the work site will wear
APR's equipped with combination organic vapor 1 high efficiency particulate air
(HEPA)cartridges.
5.0 EXPOSURE MONITORING AND ACTION LEVELS
H-Nu Monitoring* Protective Measure
0 to 5ppm None.
5 to 10 ppm APR with combination cartridges.
Use detector tube monitoring for benezene.
10 to 50PP m APR with combination cartridges ventilate
drillsite.
Greater than 50 ppm Ventilate drillsite and stop work until
concentrations decrease below50 ppm.
iEnvironmental science Associates 4 University of the Pacific Site Investigation Work Plan
June 2000 200252
