The potential for exposure clue to inhalation would probably originate from airbome vapors, <br /> gas, or dusts. Due to the nature of this project, it is necessary to perform excavation activities <br /> at the site. Dust suppression measures may be required if it is deemed that airborne materials <br /> pose a hazard. These measures will include slowing the pace of work to minimize agitation <br /> of possible airborne materials and water saturation to minimize airborne materials. <br /> With respect to direct contact, personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, <br /> and skin protection will provide protection from potential exposure. Further, the amount of <br /> direct contact with potential contaminants,other than airborne dusts, will be limited. <br /> Should respiratory irritation occur, appropriate air-purifying respiratory protective devices <br /> will be worn, with organic vapor cartridges and dust pre-filters, or with high efficiency <br /> organic vapor/HEPA stack-type cartridge. Typically, the cartridge will require replacement <br /> daily. Should direct contact occur in excess of what is anticipated through sample <br /> preservation procedures,appropriate protective clothing will be worn. <br /> Physical hazards on-site have been identified as hazards associated with soil sampling, soil <br /> excavation, and soil transport activities; fire and explosion due to the presence of petroleum <br /> hydrocarbons; and general safety hazards. <br /> 5.0 AIR MONITORING PLAN <br /> A. General <br /> An air quality monitoring program shall be implemented to provide baseline and on-going air <br /> quality data for site operations. This program shall include an on-going evaluation of on-site <br /> atmospheric contaminant concentrations during work site activities that involve significant <br /> surface disturbances using organic vapor detection instruments and detector tubes. <br /> Additionally, the probn-am will include a preliminary survey of existing air quality conditions, <br /> prior to any surface disturbances and, if possible, under anticipated "worst case" weather <br /> conditions, to be used to establish baseline levels for input into the respiratory protection <br /> selection process. The Project Safety Officer may also decide to perform perimeter <br /> monitoring of downwind air quality conditions during significant surface disturbances. <br /> B. Action Levels <br /> Photo-ionization detector (PID) readings will be taken and recorded once every hour <br /> (minimum)during the performance of these work activities. If it is determined, based on PID <br /> readings, that organic vapor concentrations in the work area reach 1 ppm in the breathing <br /> zone,half mask respirators with organic vapor cartridges will be required. <br /> SSP.Project Mo. 4 Dare <br /> i <br />
