The tanks are being made as a chemical tank with Novolac Vinyl Ester resin.
Questions have been raised as to the applicability of a UL label on tanks for this service made
in this way.
The Introduction section of the UL 1316 standard includes the following statement of scope:
These requirements cover spherical or horizontal cylindrical, atmospheric-type tanks of
glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP)that are intended for the underground storage of
petroleum-based flammable and combustible liquids, alcohols, and alcohol-blended
fuels.
There are three requirements that must be satisfied before a CSI underground FRP tank can
be UL listed for the storage of Ultrazol®:
1. In discussions with UL, if the constituents in the Ultrazol®are petroleum based, then
the UL 1316 standard is applicable. Ultrazol® is composed of petroleum based
constituents and this requirement is therefore statisfied.
2. The construction and materials used by CSI in the manufacture of the tank must
comply with the CSI UL file and have been tested by UL to the 1316 standard.
The tanks CSI is making for the storage of Ultrazol® meet these requirements and
have been UL tested to the UL 1316 Standard,
3. The Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) must accept that the tank is acceptable for this
service.
The UL 1316 Standard provides a set of manufacturing and testing criteria that must
be satisfied for a tank to be UL 1316 labeled. Those criteria include a set of test fluids
with exposure testing requirements. The list of fluids is not intended to be an
exhaustive list of every type of petroleum or alcohol based fluid. But, the list is
intended to provide a framework of test fluids that is believed to be sufficient by UL for
a tank carrying the UL 1316 label storing these types of fluids.
But, the final acceptance of this standard as necessary and sufficient for the safe
storage of a particular fuel consisting of petroleum-based flammable and combustible
liquids, alcohols, and alcohol-blended fuels including Ultrazol®remains with the AHJ.
Generally speaking, AHJ's accept the UL 1316 listing mark as meeting their
requirements for motor and aviation fuels.
UL labeled tanks for Ultrazol storage 10-27-10 Page 1 of 2 10/27/10
