MAR - 22 — a '9 W E D 10 : 07
k" KLEINFELDER
March 22, 1989
File: 20-2332-06
Mr. Walt Nichols
City of Stockton
Department of Public Works, Room 317
425 North El Dorado
Stockton, CA 95202
SUBJECT: Sampling Results
134 South Sutter
Stockton, California
Dear Mr. Nichols:
Enclosed are the analytical results for the soil samples collected from the excavation of a
1,200-gallon underground storage tank (UGST), located at 134 South Sutter Street,
Stockton, California (Plate 1, Site Location Map). A sample was obtained from the floor
and north sidewall of the new excavation and submitted for chemical analysis. Total
petroleum hydrocarbons and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene were not
indicated in the analysis of the two samples.
Previous ivi ies
A 1,200-gallon UGST was uncovered during excavation activities associated with new
construction at the site. The location of the UGST is shown on Plate 2. As the contents of
the tanks were unknown, a sample of the liquid found in the tank was obtained by a
Kleinfelder geologist on February 10, 1989, and submitted for laboratory analysis. The
analytical results indicated the liquid sample was 46 percent diesel by weight. The
remainder of the sample was composed primarily of water. Refer to Klemfelder s report
dated February 17, 1989, for analytical results of the liquid sample.
On February 23, 1989, the tank was emptied of its contents and removed from the
excavation. A Kle:nfelder geologist collected two samples from the native soil; one sample
approximately 2 feet below each end of the tank bottom. Sample 31034 was collected from
the west end of the excavation, and Sample 31035 was collected from the east end. Sample
locations are shown on Plate 3. Both samples were taken approximately 8.5 feet below
ground surface. The soil consisted of a medium brown, moist, silty clay. Samples were
analyzed by California Analytical Laboratory/Enseco for total petroleum hydrocarbons
(TPH) extractable (Method 3550) by GC/FID, and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and
xylene (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020. Sample 31035 (east end of the UGST) had a
concentration of 110 mg/kg TPH. Further investigation for the presence of soil
contamination within the excavation was requested by San Joaquin Local Health District
(SJLHD) because of the TPH concentration detected in Sample 31035.
r t>nt
