(Steps 6-10 to be implemented only if hydrocarbon odor is present in a well
sample).
6. A small, gasoline powered, suction pump will be used to purge the well. The
pump will be primed with clean water before pumping and the suction hose
will be cleaned with trisodium phosphate (TSP) and rinsed with clean water
before pumping. The suction hose from the pump will be lowered into the
well so that its suction opening is approximately one to one and one-half feet
below the water level in the well. With the discharge hose from the pump
inserted into a 55 gallon drum, the pump will be started. As the water level
drops in the well, the suction hose will be slowly lowered deeper into the well.
Pumping while lowering the hose will continue until approximately 3 to 4 well
casing volumes (about 30 gallons for a four inch well) of water have been
pumped from the well. The suction hose will be removed from the well and
step 7 will be followed.
7. After purging, a clean stainless steel, point-source bailer will be lowered into
the well, filled with water, and retrieved. A one liter (or quart) amber glass
bottle will be rinsed by filling and emptying. The liter bottle will then be
filled, refilling the bailer as needed. This bottle will be capped without
concern for trapped air.
8. Once properly obtained, the samples will be labeled and placed on ice.
Labels will specify the sampler's name, the well number, and the date and
time the sample was taken.
9. Samples will be delivered to a State certified analytical laboratory within 24
hours. Samples will be stored on ice until delivery. Samples will be analyzed
for total hydrocarbons by EPA Method 8015 Modified (GC/FID).
10. If sample results are negative, the water removed during purging will be
disposed of. If results are positive, purged water will be retained and the
Reporting Procedures described below implemented.
„ip,.05(2) Page 5
