WEISS ASSOCIATES ;
2.2 VAULT USE AND IIISTORY
According to DWG, no leaks from the vaults have occurred and only ethylene glycol
and water-based solutions containing sodium disulfate, calcium chloride and copper
sulfate have been stored in the tanks. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the
ethylene glycol, sodium disulfate, and calcium chloride are presented as Attachment A.
No MSDS is available for the copper sulfate since this chemical is not currently used at
the site. The construction characteristics of the vaults and the specific compounds stored
in the vaults are described below. The locations of the vaults are shown on Figure 2 and
the orientations of the vaults and structures surrounding the vaults are shown in Figures
3a through 3h.
Tanks 1, 5 and 6 are concrete vaults containing ethylene glycol, an anti-freeze used
for the refrigeration of the 3-million-pound-capacity walnut storage bins located along the
eastern side of the property. A concrete sealer was applied to the interior surfaces of the
tanks to decrease their permeability. Tank 1, a 1,200-gallon vault installed in 1976, is
located adjacent to the east side of the walnut bins. Tank 5, also a 1,200-gallon vault, was
installed in 1974 and is located about 300 ft. north of Tank 1. Tank 6, installed in 1974,
is a 500-gallon vault located along the west side of the walnut bins.
Tanks 7 and 8 are composed of poured concrete with fiberglass and asphalt lining,
were installed in 1956, and are located against the northern wall of the processing
building next to the main refrigeration unit. The interior corners of these vaults were
sealed with roofing tar and gunite. Tank 7 has a capacity of 3,000 gallons and holds a
chill water solution containing sodium dichromate. Tank 8 has a capacity of 5,000 gallons
and holds a calcium chloride solution containing sodium dichromate. Copper sulfate may
have been stored in these vaults in the past.
W P 1F:\ALL\331D W G\331R1AP8.DOC:74-831-00:V 3.035 Page 5
