Nome
10 February 1998
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0266
4.0. ABANDONED UST LINE REMOVAL, EXCAVATION AND SAMPLING
A set of a abandoned product lines were discovered during the UST removal. A previously
removed dispenser and the set of lines were exposed by UPE on 01 October 1997. The dispenser
location and line trenches were sampled by a representative of AGE on the same date under the
direction of the PHS-EHD.
The samples were labeled and placed in a chilled container. The samples were transported under
chain-of-custody to MAI. The date and time soil samples were taken were noted on the chain-of-
custody form is included with the attached laboratory report and quality control data. The
samples associated with the line and excavated stockpile were analyzed for TPH-d, total
petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as motor oil (TPH-mo), BTE&X with EPA methods
8015-modified for diesel and motor oil and 8020 for BTE&X.
Additional excavation was conducted on 15 October 1997 based on the analytical data of the
samples collected from the line excavation. This excavation was conducted in the eastern area of
the abandoned lines. The excavation was sampled by a representative of AGI: under the direction
of the PHS-EHD. The soil samples were labeled and placed in a chilled container. The samples
were transported under chain-of-custody to MAI. The date and time soil samples were taken
were noted on the chain-of-custody form included with the attached laboratory report and quality
control data. The soil samples associated with the lines and soil stockpile generated during the
line excavation were analyzed TPH-d, TPH-mo and total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as
gasoline (TPH-g), BTE&X with EPA methods 8015-modified for fuel hydrocarbons and 8020
for BTE&X.
5.0. RESULTS OF UST REMOVAL AND ADDITIONAL EXCAVATIONS
TPH-d and BTE&X were not detected in the samples collected from the UST excavation. TPH-d
was detected in each of the stockpile samples. The highest concentration of TPH-d was detected
in samples SP8, collected from the first soil removed from the UST overburden. TPH-d was
detected in this soil sample at 5,200 parts per million: ppm (reported in milligrams per kilogram:
mg/kg). BTE&X compounds were detected in the same samples as high as 0.98 ppm of xylene.
TPH-d and TPH-mo were detected in the soil samples collected from the line excavation as
concentrations as great as 780 ppm and 3,800 ppm, respectively. TPH-d was also detected in the
soil stockpiled from the excavation at concentrations up to 2,800 ppm. BTE&X compounds were
detected in one stockpile soil sample at concentrations as high as 0.29 ppm of xylene.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
