r • PETE WILSON, Governor
STATE OF CALIFORNIA - Environmental Protection Agency
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION AL HEA1.Th p
3443 Routier Road, Suite ASE t
- ' '•
 ..F.DICE
Sacramento, CA 95827-3098
PHONE: (916) 255-3000 94 FEB —2 PM I; 07
FAX: (916) 255-3015
31 January 1994
Mr. Nick Nickerson
Unocal Corporation
2000 Crow Canyon Place, Suite 450
San Ramon, CA 94583
REQUEST FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION: PUREGRO/BREA AG, STOCKTON
Thank you for submitting the third quarter groundwater monitoring report for the former
PureGroBrea Ag site in Stockton. A review of the three quarters of data shows that
although the 1,2-dichloropropane concentrations have declined in the three downgradient
wells, the levels are still much higher than that which this agency can allow in the
groundwater. In addition, nitrate concentrations are elevated in at least one monitoring well.
While we realize that there is still one more quarter of monitoring to be conducted (in
February), we wish to begin preparation for the next phase of investigation. As we see it,
this would be to define the extent of the 1,2-D and nitrate plumes.
Please submit a workplan, prepared by a Registered Engineer, containing a proposal for
plume definition. The workplan should also contain a proposal for continued monitoring of
the existing wells, and a timeline for all tasks. The workplan should be submitted no later
than 30 March.
If you wish to schedule a meeting, or have any questions, I can be reached at
(916) 255-3104.
WENDY WYELS
Ag Regulatory Unit
cc: Mr. Michael Infurna, San Joaquin County Environmental Health, Stockton
