Groundwater contains fertilizer and pesticide pollutants and in 2006, Western Farm
Service implemented a pilot study which is evaluating a zero-valent iron formulation to treat
these pollutants insitu.
Between the 1960s and the mid-1980s, two evaporation ponds received pesticide rinsates and
dilute fertilizer solutions. In 1995, the ponds were excavated to a depth of about three feet,
backfilled, and covered with an engineered cap. Limited soil sampling conducted in the mid-
1990s and a continuing presence of fertilizers and pesticides in groundwater lead California
Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley Region (Regional Water Board) staff to
conclude that constituents of concern remain in soil beneath the former ponds.
The progress of the pilot study and a work plan to investigate soil pollutants beneath the
ponds are presented in the following reports prepared by Geosyntec Consultants.
15 April 2008 Pilot Test Evaluation Report
1 July 2008 Former North and South Pond Areas Characterization Work Plan (North and
South Pond Work Plan)
Regional Water Board staff reviewed these documents and provide the following discussion.
Pilot Test Evaluation
The zero valent iron injectant was coated with chitin, a slow-release carbon substance which is
marketed as EHCTM. This product was injected into the pilot study grid in October 2006, and
its performance is monitored by monitoring wells PM-1 and PM-2, located 10 and 20 feet
California Environmental Protection Agency
Qa
Recycled Paper
