The benefits ofXerxes' fiberglass underground s -orage tanks <br />The best choice for underground storage of petroleum products <br />is a structurally strong, corrosion -resistant, easily installed and <br />cost-effective vessel. That's what a customer finds in every Xerxes <br />tank, which is designed and manufactured with high-quality resin <br />and glass, and features unique integral ribs. Like structural beams, <br />integral ribs add strength, and because the ribs and tanks are <br />made of the same materials and are manufactured simultane- <br />ously, the result is an extremely robust product. <br />The solution to new corrosion concerns <br />Made of corrosion -resistant materials, Xerxes fiberglass tanks <br />eliminate the possibility of either external or internal rusting of <br />the tank. For years, the concern in the petroleum industry was <br />about external corrosion. Since fiberglass doesn't rust, and steel <br />can, this gave fiberglass tank manufacturers a natural edge. <br />Today, corrosion concerns in petroleum tanks center on internal <br />corrosion, an even more pressing matter because of new fuels, <br />such as ethanol blends and biodiesels. Together, the removal of <br />lead from gasoline and the growing popularity of biofuels have <br />led to heightened awareness about corrosive environments inside <br />storage tanks. <br />A certain amount of water usually exists in the bottom of tanks, <br />and that can lead to the microbial -induced corrosion (MIC) in steel <br />tanks. Ethanol increases the likelihood of water in tanks, and the <br />resulting microbial growth. To date, there is not a single reported <br />instance in a fiberglass tank of failure due to internal corrosion <br />caused either by MIC or by water bottoms. Based on widely dis- <br />tributed advice, combatting internal corrosion in steel tanks re- <br />quires regular maintenance — in the form of frequent inspection <br />for and removal of water from tank bottoms. In contrast, fiber- <br />glass tanks require no maintenance against corrosion. <br />Many believe that this new concern about internal corrosion is <br />the reason the Steel Tank Institue (STI) and some steel -tank man- <br />ufacturers have significantly reduced their warranty coverage, <br />from 30 to 10 years. Since Xerxes fiberglass tanks are compatible <br />with the new biofuels, including E10, E85 and biodiesel blends, <br />Xerxes confidently holds to its longstanding 30 -year warranty, <br />which explicitly provides 30 years of internal corrosion coverage <br />"With or without water bottoms." <br />
