File No. NFE-4533-01 Doc. No. 9908-086
August 24, 1999
diesel, motor oil, and crude oil using EPA modified method 8015 and benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) using EPA method 8020. Samples were also sent by
overnight delivery, under chain of custody protocol, to Friedman and Bruya (F&B) in Seattle,
Washington (FLAP #1727) and analyzed for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs) using
EPA method 8270 SIM. (Selected ion monitoring).
Analytical Results
The soil sample collected at a depth of 9 feet bgs from EB7 contained the following:
° 3,400 parts per million (ppm)TEPH as crude oil (based on the response factor of diesel)
1.6 ppm toluene
0.70 ppm total xylenes
0.540 ppm acenaphthene
° 0.130 ppm benz(a)anthmcene
° 0.540 ppm chrysene
° 0.071 ppm fluoranthene
3.9 ppm fluorene
5.1 ppm phenanthrene
° 0.270 ppm pyrene
All other analytes were below detection limits. However, the detection limits for the extractable
hydrocarbons and PNAs were raised due to high levels of material,as stated by the laboratory. In
addition, the PNAs analysis was run twice with different dilution levels. Table I summarizes the
analytical results, and specifies which results are from the analysis run with the higher dilution
level.
The samples collected at a depth of 14.5 feet bgs from EB9 contained the following:
4,300 ppm TEPH as crude oil (based on the response factor of diesel)
7.5 ppm toluene
3.4 ppm total xylenes
° 0.160 ppm acenaphthene
0.035 ppm benz(a)anthracene
° 0.140 ppm chrysene
° 0.029 ppm fluoranthene
0.490 ppm fluorene
° 0.720 ppm phenanthrene
° 0.093 ppm pyrene
All other analytes were below detection limits. However, the detection limits for the hydrocarbons
were raised due to high levels of material. In addition, the PNAs analysis was run twice with
different dilution levels. Table 1 summarizes the analytical results, and specifies which results are
from the analysis run with the higher dilution level.
Earth Systems Consultants Northern California 2
