oQolularwrx
EB-9;samples of affected soil were collected at depths of 9.5 and 15 feet below ground surface(bgs),
respectively. Total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH)quantified as crude oil(rPHc),toluene, xylenes,
and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)were detected in the soil samples collected from
these borings(Table 1). No petroleum hydrocarbon-affected soil was observed in soil from borings
EB-8 or EB-10 and, therefore,no soil samples were collected from these borings for chemical
analysis.
Based on these findings,Geomatrix advanced fifteen soil borings(GMX-1 through GMX-8 and
GMX-13 through GMX-19;Figure 2)at the site between September 22 and 24, 1999. Petroleum
hydrocarbon affected soil was observed in eight borings(GMX-2,GMX-5,CWC-6,GMX-7,GMX-
13,GMX-16,and GMX-18)between depths of 7 and 19 feet bgs. Soil samples were collected from
four of these borings(GMX-2,GMX-6,GMX-7,and GMX-13). TPHc(Clo to C36)was detected in
these four samples at concentrations ranging from 880 to 18,000 milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg),
TPH quantified as diesel(TPHd;Go to Cry)was detected at concentrations ranging from 400 to 6800
mg/kg,and TPH quantified as gasoline CUB&C6 to Cl,)was detected at concentrations ranging
from 150 to 1000 mg/kg Relatively low concentrations of ethylbenzene, xylenes and PAM were
detected in two of these samples(GMX-2 and G DC-13). Benzene, toluene and methyl tertiary
butyl ether(MTBE)were not detected in any of these samples. A forensic evaluation of the soil
sample collected from boring GMX-6 indicated that the petroleum hydrocarbons present to the
sample likely represented degraded low-boiling-range(such as gasoline)and high-boiling-range
(such as crude oil)compounds. The forensic evaluation of the soil sample collected from boring
GMX-13 indicated that the petroleum hydrocarbons present in the sample were primarily degraded
low-boiling-range(such as gasoline)compounds. The degraded low-boiling-range compounds may
be associated with the former Mohawk gasoline station at the site.
To confirm the lateral extent of petroleum affected soil,a confirmation soil sample was collected
directly above the water table(approximately 11 to 12. 5 fret bgs)from seven borings advanced
outside of the area of visibly affected soil(GMX-1,GMX,3,GMX4,GMX-8,GMX-15,GMX-17
and GMX-19). TPHc,TPHd,and TPHg were not detected or were detected at concentrations less
than 100 mg/kg in these samples. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes(BTEX),MTBE and
PAHs were not detected in any of these samples. Historical soil analytical results are cunni, anzod in
Table 1.
A grab groundwater sample was collected from beneath the affected soil in boring GMX-6. This
sample was analyzed for BTEX,MTBE and PAHs. No BTEX or MTBE were detected in the
sample. Fluorene and phenanthtcne were the only PAHs detected in the sample(concentrations of
\WYDF7TOATAWOC_SWS7003TOMROSOIWWRPMOV00_DOC 2
