All coring tools and sample liners were decontaminated before and after coring
each borehole to prevent cross contamination between boreholes using the
following procedure:
• Solids were removed with a brush and washed in an Alconox-water
solution.
• Rinsing with tap water.
• Rinsing with distilled water.
All collected soil samples were delivered in a chilled condition, with proper
Chain of Custody to Centrum Analytical Laboratories in Redlands, California.
Centrum Analytical Laboratories is a California Department of Health Services
(DHS)-certified environmental laboratory (DHS ELAP Certificate No. 1184).
5.0 LABORATORY ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Soil samples at the 5-foot and 15-foot depths from borings B1 through B7 were analyzed
for petroleum hydrocarbons, VOCs and semivolatile SVOCs. The soil samples were
analyzed for TPH in accordance with modified EPA Method 8015 calibrated as gasoline
and diesel; for TRPH in accordance with EPA Method 418.1; for VOCs, including
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) in accordance with EPA Method
8060 and for SVOCs in accordance with EPA Method 8270. The soil samples from hand
auger borings HAI and HA2 were analyzed for SVOCs only in accordance with EPA
Method 8270 to detect the presence of phenol and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate.
The laboratory analytical results for the soil samples analyzed indicate that no petroleum
hydrocarbons and other organic compounds were detected in the soil samples in the area
of the airplane wash clarifier. In boring B1 near the car wash clarifier, phenol and bis(2-
ethylhexyl)phthalate were detected at a depth of 5 feet bgs at concentrations of 0.56 and
0.44 mg/kg, respectively. Because of the phenol and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate detected
in boring B1 at 5 feet bgs, the sample at 10 feet bgs in boring B1 was subsequently
analyzed for SVOC. These analytes were not detected at the 10-foot depth in boring B1.
In hand auger borings HAI and HA2, phenol and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate were not
detected in the soil samples collected at a depth of 5 feet.
The results of the laboratory analyses are summarized in Table I. Details of the
laboratory analyses are provided in Appendix VI, including Quality Assurance/Quality
Control (QA/QC) documentation.
CRC Environmental Risk Management.Inc.
