Stockton Steel
Weekly Safety Meeting
Department: L > Week Ending : J
Meeting Leader: / 1p ZK Shift(s) Attending : /
I . Safety topics covered: Hazardous Waste
Most of us have heard stories about companies who failed to handle hazardous waste properly resulting
in waste migrating to the soil or to an underground water supply. This contamination of the environment
is not acceptable. Governments around the world have passed strict laws regulating the management of
hazardous waste. Did you know that each of our business units generates several types of hazardous
waste each day. Actually, hazardous waste is generated every day at almost every industrial facility. So,
where does our hazardous waste go? Our waste is shipped off-site to approved facilities where it is
recycled into other chemical products, or where it is burned for its fuel value. Our environmental
departments ensure that the material is handled properly and does not enter the environment.
Proper contras of hazardous waste is required by law and requires everyone's help. In order to protect our
environment and avoid serious penalties, we must understand and follow the rules listed below:
1 . Containers of hazardous waste must be marked wi'h the words "Hazardous Waste", Never move
or add to these containers unless you have been directed to do so._
2y All chemicals (liquid or solid) become hazardous waste once they have been used.;and are no
longer needed for our process. Examples include used solvents, cleaning agents, process
chemicals, and janitorial products. Never put these materials into normal trash containers.
3. If you have a container of waste material, get detailed instructions on how to handle and where to
store the container. Improper management of these materials can result in serious penalties
4. Never pour any chemical down a dram or sewer connection without approval from the
safety/environmental department Never pour any chemical onto the ground into a storm drain
dry well or trench or onto a parking lot This includes all liquids even used mop wafer. See your
supervisor for instructions on approved disposal methods. .
Exercise: Discuss with your group any hazardous waste generated in your department and how it is to
be handled. Address any concerns with the environmental staff at the facility.
II . Safety concerns raised and addressed :
III.
