O'HAIR, 1102 SOUTHAURORA STREET,STOC%TON,SAN.10AQU1V COUNTY <br /> I reviewed the 3 January 2002 Workplan for Additional Subsurface Investigation(Workplan) submitted on behalf <br /> of Rexal Canada,Incorporated by Apex Environmental Incorporated(Apex). Apex proposes to complete five <br /> geoprobe borings to approximately 14 feet, and collect one soil sample and one groundwater sample from each <br /> boring for analyses of petroleum hydrocarbons and oxygenates. <br /> Apex estimates the depth to water at 12 feet. I reviewed the site files for two sites within one half mile of the <br /> subject site, and identified the current depth to water at these sites is 30 to 35 feet. General lithology consists of <br /> mixed sands, silts, and clays, and you may experience difficulty completing geoprobe borings to 35 feet or <br /> greater. Therefore,you should be prepared to collect soil and groundwater samples from this site at potentially <br /> greater depths than 14 feet. <br /> The Workplan is approved with the following comments and additions: <br /> • Starting at 10 feet, collect soil samples at five foot intervals or at changes in lithology to first encountered <br /> groundwater. Analyze representative soil samples to show two consecutive non-detect samples below any <br /> identified soil contamination. <br /> • Analyze soil and groundwater samples for TPHg,BTEX,MtBE,TBA, DIPE, TAME,ETBE, <br /> 1,2-dichloroethane, and ethylene dibromide. Some laboratories can run a complete suite of petroleum <br /> constituents and fuel additives by EPA Method 8260B,thereby saving considerable cost. <br /> • Following sample collection and analysis, submit a Preliminary Investigation and Evaluation Report <br /> (PIER) as described in the enclosed Appendix A to the Tri-Regional Staff Recommendations for <br /> Preliminary Investigation and Evaluation of Underground Storage Tank Sites. Within the PIER,include <br /> a scaled site plan to show the former UST locations and soil borings. <br /> All drilling permits must be secured through the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department(County) <br /> prior to any site work.
