is
f \
film an the water surface.
The hole was widened to about 25' X 25'9 and deepened to a depth
of approximately 20' at the south end and about 23-24' at the
north and. Although there were still some odors evident, the
limits of the equipment prevented further excavation„ Six (6)
samples were taken from the "teeth of the backhoe bucket under the
direction of Mr. Hunter & Mr. Knoll as indicated an Plates IX &
X. They were properly sealed, labeled, and placed on ice by Mr.
Hunter, stored overnight under refrigeration, and transported to
Canonie Lab the Following day under proper chain of custody,
(refer to Exhibit E. ) All spoil waw stored at the west end of the
property adjacent to Beckman Road, and properly covered with
plastic.
Analysis of the laboratory results revealed that the sidewall
samples taken from the sc;uth, west, and north walls, (SW-1, SW-2,
k & SW-3,) and the west bottom sample, (B-1,) were below detection
limits for tested substances. However, the east bottom sample,
(B-21) and the east sidewall sample, (SW--4,) still contained
measurable levels of Toluene, Ethylbeneene, Xylene, and TEPH;
! (refer to Table II for details. )
A review of the data indicated that additional spoil removal
..opeared to be the most cost--effective method of removing the
residual contamination. On September 24, 1990, an Addendum to
the April 4 work pian . was sCimitted by elm. J. Hunter &
Associates, proposing to move in larger excavating equipment and
enlarge the existing hole to the south and east in an attempt to
clean up the site; (refer to Exhibit C for details.
On Octaber .10, 1990, Jim Thorpe Oil moved in larger equipment and
after breaking up and removing concrete from the southeast end of
the excavation, began to remove spoil according to the workplan,
under the direction of Mr. Hunter & Steve Schneider of the
SJCLHD. Spoil was placed adjacent to the existing piles located
at the west end of the property. The sediments consisted
primarily of slightly damp, tan to buff-colored sandy loam, with
accassional pods or lenses of very clayey gray silty sand. A
very faint petroleums cdar was infreque, itly noticeable, but
dissipated quickly upon exposure to air. No free product was
r noted in any of the spoil, and no color was noted on samples
placed in water. The sediments were generally dry; minor
;q moisture that was encountered soon evaporated_.when
__.-_exposed_-to__
- -
air. o ree water- ar other evidence of groundwater was noted.
x .
After reaching the approximate centiguration as shown on Plates
XI fa XII,. it was agreed by Mr. ,Hunter & Mr. Schneider to take 3
L,
- - 3
