Makerov, Mike
Subject: Proposed sampling at BNSF Mormon Yard
Attachments: Fig 1_SampleLocations.pdf
On behalf of BNSF Railway (BNSF), Kennedy/Jenks Consultants (Kennedy/Jenks) will collect soil samples from the BNSF Mormon
Yard in Stockton, California to investigate the potential presence of petroleum hydrocarbons due to a prior spill of diesel from a
locomotive. Soil samples will be collected in the vicinity of the prior spill where the concentrations of total petroleum
hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) in confirmation samples were above 1,000 milligrams per kilogram (see Figure 1).The spill and
sample locations will be verified in the field with the contractor who conducted the original remediation and confirmation
sampling. Up to eight borings will be advanced to a maximum depth of 15 feet below ground surface (bgs) using direct push.
Discrete soil samples will be collected from three depths in each of the borings: at the bottom of the backfill material (believed
to be at 3 to 4 feet bgs), 5 feet bgs, and 8 feet bgs. Two additional discrete soil samples will be collected from each boring at 10
feet bgs and 12 feet bgs and held for analyses pending the results of the shallower samples. It is assumed that groundwater will
not be encountered.
Twenty-four soil samples will be submitted for laboratory analyses. Samples will be analyzed for TPHd using modified USEPA
Method 8015 with silica gel cleanup. Sixteen additional soil samples will be held for analysis pending the results for the initial 24
soil samples.
A Field Sampling Report (Report) will be prepared to describe the sampling and analysis activities. The Report will provide a
description of the soil boring and sampling techniques, the subsurface conditions encountered, and summarize the soil analytical
results.
We will proceed as soon as we receive your approval of the proposed investigation.
