I need to contact Glenn Fong and do a joint inspection with
him for his facility of Science Care in Long Beach. We had
considered an inspection a few months ago when UCLA told me the facility might be doing illegal things and
now Brent tells me they get torsos and other body parts from Science Care.
I can also send a note out to all the transporters to alert them to any facility trying to dispose of torsos.
Thanks again for visiting the Tracy facility,
Alison
From: Dabney, Alison (CDPH-EMB)
Sent: Monday, July 10, 2017 1:05 PM
To: 'Newton, Ingrid'
Subject: RE: Science Care Long Beach & Pacific Medical Tracy
Hello Ingrid,
I have one thing, maybe two for you. Last week, I had one of your Tracy customers, Pacific Medical, try to find
a different disposal method for several 95 Ib. torsos (average wt.), because of your weight limit of 50 lbs. on the
container. They were calling other transporters to see if someone else would take what is normally prohibited
on a waste acceptance protocol. I advised them to use a local crematory or return the torsos to Science
Care. If you recall, you said as of Dec. of 2016, Science Care was a customer of Stericycle, so I don't know if
they still are, since I couldn't find them on the 1st quarter report. In any case, please note that both companies
might have violated your acceptance protocol and the law by taking torsos in for incineration, when they should
be cremated.
Thankfully they weigh too much, but I realize I need to educate several entities on this unethical practice.
The first unethical item is that when someone donates their body for research and/or science, they are usually
told the body will be cremated, not sent to an incinerator with pharmasharps, trace chemo and lab mice. The
second is that some of the tissue and cadaver companies are deliberately sending the bodies to a medical
waste transporter to save money.
Any help your company can provide in screening out these folks with certain waste streams that violate your
protocol would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Alison
From: Newton, Ingrid [mailto:INewton(cDSTERICYCLE com]
Sent: Monday, July 10, 2017 12:45 PM
1
