MAR-24-99 iS 42 From WOODWARD CLYDE ¢ T-735 P 14/34 J6-482
Description -The KABIS Sampler is a novo ground-water sampling device designed to eliminate sample turbidity,
contaiminant volatilization, and costly well purging There are three models, one of which easily fits arty 2"well,taking
a single 40m1 VOA vial sample The other two models may be used in wells 4"-or larger diameter wells, and will take
0 UP to a 1-liter be tlo ocimple or three simultaneous 40 ml vial samples.
Construction-The KA815 Sampler is precision machined from solid stainless steel All crevices and comors have
been radiused or hollow-ground to soave no"square"edges The sampler is sturdy and field-ready The sampler is
stored and carried in a sturdy carrying case There are no moving parts,so there is nothing to break down If the
sampler is accidentally run over by a vehicle or damaged in any way, components are easily removed and replaced
(splens are only two,the cep and the body) Even dented, the sampler will still operate and be capable of obtaining a
sample,
General-The KABIS Sampler cap was loaded with a standard 40 milliliter VOA vial and the cap was screwed to the
weighted body The sampler oras then lowered down tho wolf to the predetemuned sampling depth at which point the
sampler automatically began filling (sampling).Sampling was facilit led via Ltminar flow directly into the sample
container
Well Purging-The KABIS Sampler is engineered to obtain a sample from any depth desired This means that the
eamplar can ba lowered down the well to a depth substantially below the top of this screened interval, where the well
is free to communicate with form-ational groundwater A representative sample of the formational groundwater was
obtained without the generation of hazardous waste and associated disposal costs
Turbidity-Turbidity was Kept low due to the hydrodynamic shapo of the sampler The'bullet"shape of the sampler
weight, attached to the sampler body, gently pars the wator column creating laminar flow across the smooth outer
sampler body surface The result was a minimal disturbance to the settled flocculants and clay and sift particles in
the well, allowing for a less turbid sample
Low VOC Loss-The samplo collection tube is positioned so that it rests approniirrately%'above the bottom of the
receiving sample container(40 ml vial) The VOA vial is slowly fillod from the bottom up The receiving VOA vial was
repeatedly rinsed with the receiving sample liquid, assuring purity through repeated flushing(a procedure
recoirmended In "Standard Methods for laboratories')
VOC loss through sample transfer was reduced because the sample was collected directly into the sampling
container, and there was no disturbance to the water column during sampler penetration The sample container was
filled from the bottom-up via laminar flow and in the absence of air(at the point of filling), effervescence, splashing,
and bubbling(sources for volatilization)were eliminated. The sample container was removed from the sampler and
capped giving an atmospheric exposure time of less than 5 seconds The VOA vial caps used for this study were
equipped with a convex conical TeflonTm sealing septum
The samples were preserved using hydrochloric said introduced directly through the gill tube This was accomplishad
using a standard 5 milliliter insulin syringe fust prior to removal of the sampler cap This operation was quick,
efficient, and kept direct contact with the acid to a minimum
Decontamination
The KABIS Sampler was designed for ease of operation and decontamination The sampler was decontaminated
after use in each well.simply by repeatedly immersing the sampler first in ALCONOXTM (or equivalent)solution,
then clean tap water followed by a rinse in de-ionized water The sampler was allowed to air dry after use(in the
field)or was immediately lorded with another sample container and used in the next well The all-stainless steel
construction allowed the sampler to be cleaned in an autoclave at the end of the sampling runs
13 of 14
3/24&94 21 pari
