Samples of soil gas were obtained from locations and depths
eztablished by Woodward-Clyde Consultants. At each location, samples were
collected via 314-inch ID galvanized probes which had been thoroughly cleaned
with detergent and steam. Installation of these probes to the required depths
was accomplished with a pneumatically-operated driver.
Upon installation, a vacuum pump was used to evacuate the probe of atmosphere
and draw vapors from the soil into the probe. Samples were obtained in 300-mL
glass sampling vessels, pre-evacuated to approximately 0.2 psia. A valve
fitted to the sampling probe permitted sample collection to the exclusion of
atmosphere, An in-line vacuum gauge served to indicate both the rate and the
extent to which the gas vessels filled.
Short!,%, after col 'Ect i on, a i i sGi pl es ware analyzed oni-s i to in a r1 caul l e
laboratory equipped with a Hewlett-Packard gams chromatograph with flame
ionization and photoionization detectors. Two milliliters of sample volume
were withdrawn from the sampling vessels by means of a gas-tight syringe,
brought to atmospheric pressure, then injected dire,.t,ly into the
chromatograph. Additionally, vessels were prepared in the same fashion to
represent method blanks and high purity commercial standards.
f
A NATIONAL standard of excellence LOCATED NEAR YOU!
