One of these monitoring wells, MW9, is to be installed in an area of suspected soil
contamination, thus further investigating the vertical extent of the soil contamination.
PHS/EHD concurs that additional investigation of the extent of soil and groundwater contamination is
necessary; however, PHS/EHD questions some aspects of the work plan. The necessity of installing
four inch diameter monitoring wells instead of two inch diameter monitoring wells should be explained.
Also, the number of perimeter wells proposed should be justified. Finally, the proposed monitoring
well, MW9, was specified to be constructed with approximately 60 feet of screened casing. For the
purpose of groundwater monitoring, the maximum amount of screened interval which is allowed is 20
feet. A twenty foot screened interval is considered to have sufficient screened casing to accommodate
changes in the static groundwater level without unduly diluting the samples collected. If this well is to
be used for vapor extraction testing, screening should not extend below the static groundwater level.
PHS/EHD requests that an explanation of MW9's construction and purpose be provided.
Once PHS/EHD has evaluated and approved the additional information and any modifications
proposed, PHS/EHD will issue a drilling permit. Please be informed that PHS/EHD should be notified
48 hours in advance of any field activities. If you have any question or comments, please contact me
at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Mary Meays, SeniorEHS Diane .
