ameO
of SVE/AS at Shop 10 to remediate a similar petroleum hydrocarbon release suggests that this
technology can be successfully applied at this site.
Before a full scale SVE/AS system can be designed, a more detailed evaluation of the extent
Y 9
of petroleum hydrocarbon impacts in the source area is necessary so that the AS/SVE wells
can be properly located (laterally and vertically)to effectively deliver air to the areas of highest
petroleum hydrocarbon impacts. In addition to further source area characterization, AMEC
recommends that an AS pilot test be conducted to confirm that air can be effectively delivered
to the subsurface to promote biodegradation and volatilization of contaminants in the source
area and to develop Site specific AS design parameters.
3.0 PROPOSED FIELD ACTIVITIES
As discussed in the previous section, AMEC is proposing conduct an investigation within the
source area to determine the location of the remaining petroleum hydrocarbon mass in soil
and groundwater. AMEC will then use this information to locate an AS well and a series of
observation wells in the area of highest petroleum impacts to facilitate an AS pilot test. The
following subsections present the investigation objectives, pre-field activities, Site
characterization field activities, and rationale and approach for installing the new wells. The AS
pilot test activities are then presented in Section 4.0.
3.1 SITE INVESTIGATION OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Site Investigation are as follows:
1. Better characterize the lateral and vertical, extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in the
source area; and
2. Identify the area of highest petroleum hydrocarbon impacts for installation of the AS
pilot test well.
L.i 3.2 PRE-FIELD ACTIVITIES
Pre-field activities will include development of a health and safety plan, procurement of permits
and property access, and underground utility clearance.
3.2.1 Health and Safety Plan
AMEC will prepare a Site-specific health and safety plan (HSP)to protect the public and Site
personnel during the investigation and pilot test fieldwork. The HSP will include health and
safety precautions for known and potential physical and chemical hazards anticipated for the
field effort.
