Wastewater treatment system and characteristics
1 The cause and source of the release is currently unknown A separate offsite
investigation discovered elevated MTBE concentrations in upgradient wells The detected
constituent is MTBE The site was assigned "Notice of Responsibility"March 9, 2005
2 The groundwater treatment system proposed for this site is an Environmental
Resolutions, Inc (ERI) ERI-4000 fluidized bed bioreactor The bioreactor consists of a
biomass supported on fine sand The biomass adheres to the sand while consuming MTBE
and other gasoline constituents in water as it passes upward through the fluidized mass The
biomass is a consortium of naturally occurring bacteria found in many locations in
California ERI bioreactors destroy the contaminants rather than simply transferring them to
a different medium, such as activated carbon The bioreactor does not generate air emissions
or noise
