Ms. Katie Hower GEOMATRIX
Chevron Pipe Line Company
19 March 1997
Page 5
previous experience, Old Valley Pipeline sites are typically a hybrid between a vadose zone case
and a groundwater case as defined in the RWQCB criteria because the petroleum has reached the
water table, but groundwater is minimally impacted by dissolved constituents (if at all). Because
Old Valley Pipeline "soil-only" cases will be handled by the County (see Step 2), cases handled by
RWQCB will be defined as "groundwater" cases. Closure request documentation will conform, as
applicable, to Appendix B of the Tri-Regional Guidelines (RWQCB, 1994). Ultimately, the age
of the release(s), the weathered nature of the petroleum, and steady-state conditions at these sites
will allow for decisions based on site data to be made with a high degree of confidence.
We appreciate the opportunity to continue to provide our environmental consulting services to
Chevron Pipe Line Company. Please call me if you have any questions about this approach.
Sincerely yours,
GEOMATRIX CONSULTANTS, INC.
4awn'A.
