PHS/EHD has discussed the soil and groundwater analytical results obtained
during the installation and the groundwater sampling of the air sparge wells with Central Valley
Regional Water Quality Control Board staff and has prepared the following directive for your
response.
The concentrations observed in the groundwater samples obtained from the air sparge wells
that are screened at approximately 27 - 30 feet below ground surface warrant additional vertical
investigation to assess the migration and disposition of soil and/or groundwater contamination
in the area of the former tank location.
At minimum, one soil boring immediately outside of the tank pit will be required. PHS/EHD
understands that Chevron is reluctant to bore through the tank pit because of problems which
may be encountered due to.the pea gravel material used for backfilling. If necessary and based
on field observations, additional borings will be required to evaluate the lateral extent of the
contamination plume's vertical migration.
Please submit a work plan as soon as possible, since the results must be included within the
corrective action plan that is due no later than May 30, 1997.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, RENS, Director
Environmental Health Division.
C
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Margaret Lagorio, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
cc: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB
cc: Aaron O'Brien, Geraghty and Miller
A Division of Sanjoaquin County Health Care Services
