2905 West Benjamin Holt Drive, Stockton, California March 16, 1994
Chevron U.S.A. Products Company Page 14
5.3 Bio-Sparging
Costs associated with the implementation of bio-sparging include the following:
Capital Costs
'• Subcontractor, consulting, and laboratory fees for the installation of a bio-sparge well
• Consulting and laboratory fees for a blo-sparge pilot test to analyze the site-specific
feasibility of this remediation alternative
• Subcontractor, consulting, laboratory, equipment, and materials fees for the installation
and startup of a bio-sparge system
• Subcontractor, consulting, and laboratory fees for confirmation borings and additional
assessment to analyze the effectiveness of remediation
Operational.Costs
• Labor, consulting, and laboratory fees for monitoring and sampling to monitor the
effectiveness of the system
• Labor, consulting, and laboratory fees for groundwater monitoring and sampling until
closure of the project
Capital costs of bio-sparging are less than those required for the soil vapor extraction and for the air
sparging/soil vapor extraction alternatives, but are greater than the capital costs for the source
removal/isolation alternative. Bio-sparging avoids higher capital costs by eliminating the need for vapor
extraction/destruction equipment. Operational costs are somewhat lower than soil vapor extraction
and/or air sparging due to lower permit fees, equipment maintenance costs, and laboratory fees.
Additional costs that must be considered are those Incurred as a result of loss of business (service
station operation). The extent of loss of business is dependent on the interruption caused during the
bio-sparge system installation.
The benefits associated with the bio-sparge remediation alternative are the removal of hydrocarbons
from soil and groundwater beneath the site which reduces any liability associated with leaving
hydrocarbon-impacted material in place. In addition, bio-sparging represents the lowest total cost of the
hydrocarbon mass removal aeration alternatives.
a es.
f `
E 5073PAR.RPT
GROUNDWATER
 TECHNOLAGY
