CONSULTING ENGINEERS
I;
,s
UEC 1988
December 9, 1988 ' T;1
Mr. Kyle Christie
ARCO Products Company
2000 Alameda de las Pulgas
San Mateo, California 94403 017-3173-30/1
Subject: Quarterly Sampling Results, ARCO Station 2133,
2908 Benjamin Holt Drive, Stockton, California ;
Dear Mr. Christie:
On August 26, 1986, Brown and Caldwell collected groundwater samples from six selected
monitoring wells at the subject site. Brown and Cadwell also collected one water sample
(T-1) from the recovery system.
Quarterly Sampling
Prior to sampling wells PR-1, PR-2, BHD-1, E-5, E-8, and E-y, a centrifugal pump was
used to purge approximately three well casing volumes of water from each. Each well was
then sampled with a Teflon bailer equipped with a bottom-emptying valve. The sample
was then drained directly from the bottom valve into two 40-milliliter glass bottles with
Teflon-lined septa. Sample T-1 was collected directly from the discharge valve between
the pump and the sr,:arato- tank. A 1-liter amber glass bottle was used to collect Sample
T-1. The sa,,tples were stored on ice from the time of collection through delivery to
Eureka Laboratories. All of the monitoring well samples were analyzed for benzene,
ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene (BETX) by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Method 502. Sample T-1 was analyzed for total petroleum fuel hydrocarbons (TPH) by
EPA Method 8015, modified. Results are summarized in Table !, The complete
laboratory reports are enclosed. All groundwater produced during well sampling was
contained and temporarily stored on site in 55-gallon drums pending results of the
analytical tests.
Constituents in the groundwater sample from well PR-I are below detection limits. Tile
sample from monitoring well PR-2 has detectable levels of toluene and xylene. BETX
constituents are detectable in the samples from wells BHD-1, E-5, E-8, and E-9. In these
four samples, the benzene concentration exceeds California Department of Health Services
(DHS) Drinking Water Action Levels.
Benzene concentrations in wells BHD-1, E-8, and E-9 have increased since the spring
quarter, 1988 (May 2, 1988), Table 2 summarizes the benzene concentrations from May 2,
1988, and August 26, 1988,
727 G STREET SACRAMENTO,CALIFORNIA 955I440g2•(9%)444-0123
