CITY OF STOCKTON
5
OF-PARTMIENT OF MUNICIPAL UTILITIES
2500 NAVY❑RIVE
STCCKT0Nj, CA 9E20G-1 I S1
(209)937-E750
FAX(205)d37-?709
December 15, 1997
Mr. Ron Clark, Transportation Manager
GATX Logistics, Inc.
4547 Frontier Way
Stockton, CA 95215
FIRE SUPPRESSI N WASTEWATER CONTAESING BATTERY ACID ROFF
This letter provides you with confirmation of the City of Stockton, Municipal Utilities Department's
(MUD)inspection of the cleanup operation at the above addressed facility as a result of the truck fire
containing approximately 150 truck/forklift batteries, which occurred on Wednesday, December 10,
1997.
I am in receipt of the laboratory analytical results documenting sampling that was conducted within
the storm drains in the south and north locations on your property, as well as sampling locations in
the City's storm drainage system on Gold River Lane (see attached map).
The subsequent cleanup operation entailed neutralizing approximately 300 gallons of fire suppression
water containing acid runoff from the spent batteries. The neutralization process was accomplished
within the storm drainage system, the neutralized liquid was then removed via a vacuum truck, and
temporarily stored in a storage container on your property. It is my understanding that all of this was
conducted and supervised by Tom Bartlett of Erickson, Inc.
You have requested discharging approximately 300 gallons of the neutralized waste into the City's
sanitary system. The attached laboratory results indicate low levels of CAM 17 metals which will
not pose a threat to our sanitary treatment plant. Additionally, I observed pH testing of the stored
wastewater, and both City storm drain locations on Gold River Lane following their cleanup.
Therefore, you may proceed with the one-time discharge to the sanitary system providing:
1. The fire suppression wastewater be flushed with an additional 300 gallons of water
to insure its passage through the sanitary system.
2. This is a one-time only discharge based upon the nature and the source of the liquid.
Any additional volumes of wastewater generated during normal operating activities
must be addressed independently of this request.
"STOCKTON.-CALIFOCaNWS SUNRISE SEAPORT"
