Ms Laurie Cotulla
April 29, 1992
Page 9
2. Thermal Oxidation Thermal oxidation requires supplemental propane or natural gas
ARCO's Health and Safety policy discourages the use of a propane tank at ARCO
stations In addition, the use of propane or other supplemental fuel would result in high
operatmg cost compared with catalytic oxidation.
3. Catalytic Oxidation Catalytic oxidation would be a cost-effective treatment method
for the extracted vapors A 100 cubic-feet-per-minute (cfm) catalytic oxidizer will be
capable of oxidizing approximately 110 pounds of hydrocarbons per day [3,000 parts
per million (ppm) at 100 cam] at a low average operating cost The power consumption
is typically low at the start of vapor extraction when hydrocarbon concentrations are
relatively high, then increases over time as the hydrocarbon concentrations in the soil
are reduced Should a system failure occur, BCC personnel would be notified by an
autodial or other similar telemetry system
The soil vapor treatment system will be located adjacent to the existing groundwater extraction
system The proposed locations of the vapor extraction wells and piping is presented on
Figure 3 The actual locations of the vapor extraction wells and piping will be determined by
a number of factors including field conditions (existing underground piping etc ) The vapor
extraction piping will be buried at an approximate depth of 3 feet bgs The depth of the vapor
extraction wells will be determined in the field during drilling and will be based on the depth to
groundwater and lithology
Currently, a groundwater extraction system is in place and operational at this site The
implementation of the soil vapor extraction system will reduce hydrocarbon concentrations in the
soil as well as the groundwater
If you have any questions about this addendum, please contact me at (916) 444-0123
Sincerely,
BRO AND CALDWELL CONSULTANTS
t
Steven D Misner wreFli P` s
X*
Project Manager Caifoirimg Geologist#3710
SDM.jrb
4F CpUFO`i`
cc.
