(Delta), has been authorized by Exxon Company, U.S.A.
(Exxon),to conduct a soil vapor extraction(SVE)pilot test at the above-referenced site(Figures 1
and 2). The purpose,of this test is to evaluate the soil vapor hydrocarbon ooncentt$dons at the'site
and the remedial effectiveness of SVE. The proposed rest will be conducted in November 1995.
{
This letter describes the proposed work to be conducted.
k i!
1 During the SVE test, a portable vacuum blower wffl be used to induce a vacuum in ground water
monitoring well MW-5 for a period of approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending on soil vapor
concentrations. Recovered vapors will be routed through a 2-inch diameter hose from the well head
to the blower then to an emission control unit, which will consist of two 700-pound vapor p4ase
granular activated carbon columns in series. Emissions will be discharged through an 8-foot high,
2-inch diamerrr, Schedule 40 PVC discharge stack The discharge stack will be equipped with a
!F concentration/samplinghemperaaue port for monitoring of carbon breakthrough.
Air flow and concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons (rPH)will be measured to calculate
emission rates. The velocity of the airstream will be measured by use of an anemometer, and TPH
concentrations will be monitored both up and downstream of the vapor phase carbon unit using a
flame ionization detector(FID). This meter is calibrated to hexane and the concentration is indicated
in parts per million by volume. For confirmation of the FID measurements, samples of the blower
exhaust (vapor phase carbon influent) will be collected during the test for laboratory analysis of
benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,total xylenes,and TPH concentrations.
The information collected during the test will be evaluated and reported to San Joaquin County
Environmental Department.
r
r
Upon approval of the proposed SVE test,Delta will conduct the test.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
f4jBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Pmviding a Competitive Eage P.0.
