„s SECTION 3
y:
SITE INVESTIGATION
SOI.BORING AND SOEL SAMPLING PROCEDURES `
Three (3) soil borings were installed using 10-inch hollow-stern augers. Boring
locations were described in Section 2 and are shown in Figure 4. Soil borings were
designated as SB-01, SB-02, and SB-03, which correspond to monitoring wells mW-1,
MW-2 and MW-3, respectively. The total depth of each boring was 25 feet below
ground surface (bgs). Total depth was selected based on encountering groundwater at
approximately 15 feet bgs in each well, which allowed construction of monitoring
wens
with 10 feet of screened interval below and 5 feet of screened interval above the water
table.
During soil-boring operations, sail samples were collected at least every five feet in
the unsaturated zone with a split-spoon sampler. Representative portions of the soil
samples were split for head space OVA screening, lithologic description, and laboratory
analysis. Soil samples were collected in brass tubes within the split-spoon sampler. The
ends of each tube were covered with Teflon to and then
Pe capped with plastic caps. The
caps were sealed with duct tape, at the recommendation of the Public Health Services
representative.
During soil-boring operations, geological descriptions of the soil were made by an on-
site geologist, and soil-boring logs were constructed. These soil-boring logs (witlr
monitoring well construction data)are displayed in Appendix B.
The most c mtaminated soil sample above the water table from each boring was
submitted for laboratory analysis. The most contaminated sample was determined by
field OVA analysi. For each sampling point, soil was preserved in glass jars filled
approximately 1/2 full, and the jar mouth covered with aluminum foil and then capped.
3-1
175VA5 4/24191
