BACKGROUND <br /> 2.1 SITE SETTING <br /> The project site is located in northwest Stockton, California at the southeast corner of <br /> Grigsby Place and West Benjamin Holt Drive, approximately 200 feet west of Interstate <br /> Highway 5 The site is surrounded by a mixture of commercial and residential properties <br /> The site is bounded by a shopping center and a Shell gasoline station to the north, a church <br /> and residential area to the west, a water tower, Seven-Eleven parking lot and store and <br /> residential area to the south and Interstate Highway 5 to the east <br /> The site was an active Exxon Retail Service Station from 1968 to 1991 Three single- <br /> walled steel underground storage tanks,previously containing gasoline and having a <br /> capacity of 6,000 gallons (used to store extra unleaded gasoline), 8,000 gallons (used to <br /> store regular leaded gasoline) and 10,000 gallons (used to store unleaded gasoline), were <br /> located in the northwest corner of the site A 1,000 gallon waste oil tank was located in the <br /> southern portion of the site, south of the station house/garage According to a report by <br /> Engineering Science, Inc (ESI) of Berkeley, California, all underground storage tanks on <br /> the property were original <br /> 2.2 PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS <br /> In March, 1991, Engineering Science, Inc of Berkeley, California (ESI) drilled three soil <br /> borings at the site and converted them into 4-inch diameter groundwater monitor wells, MW- <br /> 1, MW-2 and MW-3 Depth to groundwater was measured at approximately 14 feet below <br /> ground surface Groundwater flow direction was to the northeast <br /> In June, 1991, Artesian conducted a Phase II subsurface investigation at the site to evaluate <br /> the vertical and lateral extent of the hydrocarbons detected in the soils in the previous <br /> investigation and the lateral extent of hydrocarbons detected in the groundwater <br /> 1 <br /> i <br />
